University College London, Howland Street

For this new research centre at UCL, to be known as the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, ESH supplied and installed trace heating to provide frost protection to the following external pipework:

  • Ground floor - feed pipework to salt saturators
  • Level 4 - Heat rejection pipework to cooler
  • Level 6 - CHW and LTHW pipework 
  • Level 6 - Cold water pipework to pressurisation unit and bib taps
  • Level 6 - Heat recovery pipework

550m of FBTBOJ self regulating heating cable was supplied and installed on all cold and chilled water pipework, along with 970m of H2OWAT55 for all other services.

Frankley WTW

Seven Trent Water's Frankley Water Treatment Works at Frankley, Birmingham, supplies drinking water to Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Part of the £31.5m project to upgrade Frankley WTW, ESH supplied and installed a total of 1270m of trace heating cable to perform the following duties:

  • Provide frost protection to the water / lime pipework
  • Temperature maintain the sodium bisulphite pipework at +15°C in a minimum ambient temperature of -20°C

Our FBTBOJ10/2 heating tapes were installed to the underside of the pipework in a straight trace configuration and secured to the plastic pipe using type FTA fixing tape.

Stockport WWTW


Stockport Wastewater Treatment Works is the 12th largest wastewater facility in the north west of England. During recent upgrades, ESH were contracted to design, supply materials and labour to install a frost protection trace heating system to external pipework and vessel in a minimum ambient temperature of -20°C. In total 840m of type FBTBOJ self regulating heating cable was required to complete this project.

In a minimum ambient temperature of -20°C, over 300 metres of type SC constant wattage heating tape was triple traced to the underside of the pipework in order to maintain the required product temperature.

The system included 12 power junction boxes with BMS fault relays fitted. This large new children's home in Leeds creates 24 bedrooms, a teaching block, a canteen, leisure facilities and administrative space.

The Leadenhall Building - London

The Leadenhall is a unique 46 floor, 610,000 sq ft office tower prominently located in the centre of the City of London. Over the past two years, ESH have designed, supplied and installed trace heating applications across a number of floors to perform the following duties: 

  • To maintain the temperature of the domestic hot water pipework at +55°C. The system was design utilising our H2OWAT self regulating heating cable
  • To provide a frost protection system to the CHW flow & return pipework feeding six cooling towers

In total over 1740m of trace heating tape was supplied and installed within this fabulous new London landmark.

This housing project on a 2.5 hectare site of the former Linton Estate, will provide around half of the affordable rent properties for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham's Reside scheme. 

ESH were contracted to design, supply and install over 680 metres of type FBTBOJ self limiting heating tape to provide frost protection to the external BCWS and LTHW (flow & return) pipework, on top of 13 modular roofs.

For this Raychem specified project, ESH supplied and installed a trace heating system for frost protection to the CHW pipework and CWS pipework. 170m of Raychem self regulating trace heating cable FS-A-2X was installed to complete the system.

Barnsley District & General Hospital

For this frost protection Raychem specified project, ESH installed Raychem type FS-B-2X self limiting heating tape onto the CHW pipework.

A frost protection project on external metal pipework required ESH to design, supply and install a trace heating system using our type FBT self regulating heating cable.

Fox's Biscuits - Uttoxeter

Within Fox's food manufacturing unit, ESH were contracted to design, supply and install two separate trace heating systems:
  • System one was the temperature maintenance of a large vessel at +40°C
  • System two required the heat raising of a vessel from a starting temperature of +5°C up to +40°C
Both systems were designed using type VCBOJ constant wattage heating tape.

Kings College Hospital - London

For this major London teaching hospital, ESH supplied over 580 metres of constant wattage heating tape along with thermostats, junction box's and all other trace heating ancillaries. Labour was also supplied to complete onsite terminations.

Rumenco, Burton on Trent

For this process temperature maintenance application, ESH designed, supplied and installed a trace heating system to a stainless steel tank containing molasses. The 1.22m diameter x 1.37m tall steel tank, needed to maintain a temperature between +60 to +70°C.

Bristol Water WTW

Within this water treatment works, ESH designed, supplied and installed a frost protection trace heating system onto plastic pipework in two external areas:

  • Water pipework in a Brine Bund area - 32mm NB pipework to be maintained at +5°C

  • Pipework in the Sodium Hypochlorite Bund area - 100mm NB pipework to be maintained at 0°C
